Fifth & Forbes is Pittsburgh's last remaining retail sector that contains a high percentage of historic buildings and remains untouched by "urban renewal." It includes some of the finest examples of period architecture in our downtown and has a refreshing human scale to it that is largely due to building height, store front designs and architectural detailing. Meandering in and around its Market Square core one encounters many locally owned businesses as well as many derelict and empty buildings. In 2000, Preservation Pittsburgh joined with many other citizens and preservationists to save it from a massive urban renewal project that would have leveled five blocks and replaced these heritage sites with an urban mall filled with chain stores. We participated in the Plan B and Plan C Task Forces and continue to advocate for a renewing process that respects the contributions of local businesses and historic architectural sites.
