Regardless of whether you are a "regular" church, synagogue
or temple goer,
you cannot be oblivious to the world-class religious architecture
that exists
in our city. It is integrally tied to the history of Pittsburgh
and in many
cases, was built by immigrants even before their own neighborhoods
and houses
were secured. We prefer a European model of dealing with historic
religious
structures--they must be saved and cannot afford to go under the
wrecking ball
because they are too precious to lose. If sacred uses cannot be
found for them,
then adaptive uses should be the alternative--they will NEVER be
built again
and deserve to be preserved for all Americans.
